Prohibition of Use of Substance Order 1999: Bans or restricts four hazardous substances, including crocidolite asbestos and benzene, at work.

IN exercise of the powers conferred by section 35 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 [Act 514], the Director General of Occupational Safety and Health makes the following order:

Order 1. Citation and commencement

• (1)
  This order may be cited as the Occupational Safety and Health (Prohibition of Use of Substance) Order 1999.
• (2)
  This Order shall come into operation on 2 August 1999.

Order 2. Prohibition of use of substance

• The substances listed in column (1) of the Schedule shall be prohibited from use to the extent as specified in column (2)

Schedule [Paragraph 2(1)] — Prohibition of use of substance

1.	4-Aminodiphenyl; Benzidine; 2-Naphthylamine; 4-Nitrodiphenyl; their salts; and any substance containing any of their compounds in any other substance in a total concentration exceeding 0.1 percent	Manufacture and use for all purposes including any manufacturing process in which a substance described in column 1 is formed, except for research or analytical purposes
2.	Crocidolite	All purposes except for research or analytical purposes
3.	Benzene; Carbon disulphide; Carbon tetrachloride and n-Hexane	Cleaning and degreasing
4.	White phosphorus	Use in the manufacture of matches
